MID-CITY

A district strongly affected by Katrina, though emerging

I live in Mid-City, a residencial district of squared streets and small wood houses not far from the French Quarter (3 kms), where you can go easily on the Canal St street car.
The area was very affected by Katrina, more than The French Quarter, because beeing farther from the Mississipi river the terrain is of lower altitude (You would never notice the difference even if you ride).

Although some vacant lots and abondoned houses still recall the effects of Katrina,  the area is definitively emerging. Many houses are beeing renovated and new hospitals, restaurants, green areas and bussiness have opened recently. Among those, I want to mention two: the Broad Theater (set inside one old boxing gym) and the Laffite Greenway, a 2-mile-path for pedestrians and cyclists opened in november 2015. It not only connects Mid-City with French Quarter, but intends to transform the industrial landscape of the area into a linear park. As gardens and recreational  areas are planned, shops, restaurants and housing are beeing projected.

An abandoned house being renovated to host a pizza place downstairs and appartments upstairs.
